I wish Epyc was more available in pre-built servers

But as it is any major manufacturer tower server system that is somewhat general use like this one I’m replacing at my FIL’s practice is basically always going to be a Xeon. 6 cores and 64GB of ram is a nice upgrade over the ~12 year old dual core Xeon with 4 GB of ram he has now.

After pricing many we ended up with a ThinkSystem ST50 with the upgraded raid card, the Xeon  E-2186G, 64GB of ram etc. Sadly no feasible way to get solid state storage in the mix but this should net him another 10 years based on how he uses it.

Was in a very similar situation to you at my last job where I (but instead someone very not qualified) had to spec out a server for our new Sage MAS installation. Was really pushing for an Epyc server but my supervisor was determined to only choose from Dell servers.

Ended up with a Poweredge R340(?) with exactly that E-2186G, 16GB RAM, RAID 1 SSDs. The software people said that it didn’t need a lot of cores more so it needed to clock high, and the E-2186G really has no competitor (in that specific case.) They run on a 10+ year upgrade cycle there, just decommissioned a Windows 2000 server my first year there.

Now I’m in a government job (no longer IT) and the first thing my supervisor did was like “hey, I heard you like computers.” And got the IT department to give me a tour of the server room. They pointed at one server and was like, yeah that was over $10,000.

It’s very  easy to go over $10k for a server. A lot of the cost is hard drives and RAID setups. Just out of curiosity I just did an online configuration on a a Dell R7415 with an Epyc processor and it was still $7k for a fairly modest setup.

That was my shock moving into a large quasi-governmental organization. Penny pinching some places and money doesn’t matter for others. We replace $60k servers at a 5 year lifecycle and send them to the shredder when done (data security).

Its a strange place to be - but also can be fun as hell.

At my job in college we had a server that cost $250k (in circa 2000) money. You can certainly spend much more, but also way more than we should have spending. Apparently someone was asked “what would you get if money was no object? ”, and apparently understood it to mean “get what you want, money is no object”. The purchase went through, but they no longer worked there when I started.

Imagine using a prebuilt instead of building your own CPU lmao

Maybe the issue it that your “servers” have specs similar to my laptop. I have an R620 with 384GB of RAM and   32 cores running ESXi for things like piHole and Ark - and it’s OLD. You could have just built him a Ryzen.

Severmonkey sells good stuff.

Mine are usually about 30k each, and I have hundreds of them.  Tax dollars at work.

It’s a server in a tiny medical office that doesn’t make money if it’s not running. Uptime & Warranty > Build your own.

Uptime & Warranty , when this is down he doesn’t make money. I don’t want to be a full time sysadmin so KISS to the maximum and do what you know.

That Thermaltake system is an absolute unit.

stinking love that case. Always wanted something like it and finally just bit the bullet for my last Ryzen build. Do not regret.

No large business is going to run crucial I T systems without a service plan that guarantees problem resolution within a day or less. Even some relatively small businesses I've worked for would lose enough money in one hour of server downtime to pay for all the servers 4 times over.

I will understand, but only if you keep the RGB
